Community Hands, Lasting Impact

By Zoe Waters, Executive Director Barwon Health Foundation

Last week, members of our team had the privilege of touring Barwon Health’s Bendigo Bank House, home to the McKellar Kids’ Rehabilitation Service.

Walking through its brightly coloured rooms, pausing in the therapy kitchen, and exploring the outdoor garden designed for play and recovery, the team witnessed a simple truth that they know well: philanthropy impacts patient experiences across Barwon Health in many ways.

It’s easy to think of hospitals in terms of beds and equipment, but Bendigo Bank House is something entirely different.

Built entirely through the generosity of our community, including a landmark contribution from Bendigo Bank, this centre was designed by kids, for kids. Every space, from the rehabilitation gym to quiet therapy rooms, has been thoughtfully created to be playful, engaging and safe.

For families who spend days, weeks, or even months here, it offers not just treatment or rehabilitation, but comfort, and a welcoming, supportive environment.

The Victorian Paediatric Rehabilitation Service (VPRS) team delivers specialist care for children and adolescents recovering from conditions such as concussion, acquired brain injuries, cerebral palsy, spinal injuries and complex neurological conditions. Their work goes far beyond physical therapy, helping children return to school, return to play, reconnect with friends, and rebuild confidence in everyday life. Just as importantly, they support families navigating the emotional journey of recovery.

Seeing this care in action, in a facility made possible through the $3.6 million Kids Appeal in 2022, is a powerful reminder of the enduring impact of community generosity.

Every single day across Barwon Health, philanthropy is in action.  caring for our community.

As we look ahead, the Barwon Health Foundation is preparing to launch a major capital appeal which will complement the biggest investment by government in health in our region with over $500 million dedicated to deliver the Barwon Women’s and Children’s. Just like Bendigo Bank House, philanthropy will fund the ‘above and beyond’, the spaces, technology and innovations that transform care and support families when they need it most.

Even from a distance, it’s clear that Bendigo Bank House is so much more than a place of treatment. Every room tells a story, of resilience, of recovery, and of a community that cares deeply for its own.

Stories like these are what drive us at the Barwon Health Foundation, especially as we prepare for our most ambitious chapter yet.

Because when we give to Barwon Health, we don’t just fund buildings or equipment, we enhance the healthcare experience of the community. The impact is truly profound.
