The Legacy of Our Firefighters

28 Oct 2025

There’s something profoundly humbling about the quiet acts of generosity that come from people who already give so much. Firefighters are dedicated professionals who provide a critical service to our community. Their service requires courage and compassion, and they are part of our community’s fabric.

For many firefighters their contribution doesn’t stop when they leave their workplace or the sirens fade.

Through the Firefighters Charity Fund, these professionals continue to make an extraordinary difference. Each pay cycle, countless firefighters choose to give a small portion of their wages to the Fund. It’s a simple act, just a few dollars each pay, but collectively, it becomes something powerful. Those contributions go on to support vital organisations like Barwon Health.

Their generosity is inspiring.  Firefighters find room in their hearts, and their pay packets, to help others.

Recently, the Firefighters Charity Fund made their second donation to fund a digital skylight installation within Barwon Health’s oncology radiation treatment rooms. These luminous screens, set into the ceiling, transform what could be a cold, clinical environment into something warm. Patients lying still for treatment can look up and see a blue sky scattered with clouds, a soft sunrise, or a field of stars.

It’s more than just decoration, it’s comfort for patients.

For patients undergoing radiation, precision is required to ensure that only the targeted area receives radiation treatment, protecting healthy tissue from unnecessary radiation. Remaining perfectly still can be challenging, and digital skylights serve a dual purpose: they act to calm patients and provide a point of focus while they receive their treatment.

Every patient who looks up at the screen that depicts an image from nature, will be touched by the kindness of people they have never meet.

The Firefighters Charity Fund is proof that legacy lives not in fortune, but in the selfless service of those who care for others. It’s built through small, consistent acts of generosity. Every contribution is a reminder that generosity shines bright.

As poet Edith Wharton once wrote, “There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.”

Through their everyday service and quiet generosity, our firefighters are both.
