An Enduring Legacy Beyond Life

31 Mar 2025

I have always admired those whose names adorn hospital wings, health facilities, and commemorative plaques spread across the walls, gardens, and spaces of our health service. I often think about the lives these individuals lived - their experiences, families, careers, and what motivated them to create an enduring legacy beyond their natural life.

There are many familiar names that amplify the meaning of legacy at Barwon Health. Grace McKellar, Reverend Andrew Love, Percy Baxter, Beth Allerton and Adrian Costa are just a few who have left an indelible mark on our community, forever.

Yet there are also many more names that, perhaps, many won’t be as familiar with, that have equally created a legacy that will positively impact the health of our community, forever. Laurie Blick, Doreen Dwyer, Maria Lotockyj and Leslie Dawber are just a few.

When some people reflect on the legacy they will leave behind, they can mistakenly believe that only an ‘extraordinary life’ warrants a lasting tribute. But what does extraordinary mean to you? We believe that every life is remarkable, unique and deserving to be commemorated in a way that is meaningful.

The Barwon Health Foundation is honoured to facilitate legacy giving across the Barwon South West region. We work with individuals and families to create a lasting legacy that reflects their values and aspirations - whatever that may look like – forever giving back to the health of our community today, and for future generations.

While some legacy gifts come from regular donors with whom we have established long-term relationships, many others come from individuals for whom a gift in their will is their first connection to donating to the Barwon Health Foundation. These generous acts are often motivated by a meaningful patient experience - either their own or that of a loved one – or simply giving back to the community they have had a strong connection with throughout their lives.

The conversation about legacy giving does not need to begin at the end of life. We encourage everyone to reflect on and plan for the impact they wish to make during their lifetime - an impact that will continue long after.

Through legacy giving, donors make a bold investment in the future of healthcare, ensuring our local health service remains at its best. Their generosity helps to reduce the need for travel to Melbourne for medical care, supports cutting-edge medical research and clinical trials conducted right here in Geelong, and attracts the brightest minds and clinicians to our region.

The Barwon Health Foundation is proud to host the Geelong Advertiser Legacy Series where, each week, we will share the inspirational faces, stories, and impact of those who have made an enduring legacy both beyond life and during life … and some of the healthcare heroes who inspire us all.

Philanthropy can help prevent, care and cure. Please join us each week as we celebrate the history and generosity of locals supporting a healthier future for us all.

Together, we can do so much.
