A table that brings Geelong together

By Zoe Waters, Executive Director, Barwon Health Foundation

On Friday afternoon, as the last glasses were cleared from the long tables on Geelong’s waterfront and the autumn sun dipped across Corio Bay, there was a familiar feeling in the air - the quiet satisfaction of another successful Geelong’s Longest Lunch.

For more than two decades, this event has brought people together for a memorable afternoon of food, wine and conversation. But beyond the laughter and the beautiful setting, Geelong’s Longest Lunch has built something far more meaningful; a legacy of generosity for Barwon Health.

Each year, hundreds of guests take their seats along long tables at Transvaal Square. Many arrive for the promise of a delicious afternoon, and they are never disappointed. But what makes the Longest Lunch special is that everyone there knows they are part of something bigger.

Every ticket purchased helps support the work of Barwon Health and the care delivered to thousands of people across our region each year.

Behind the scenes, the event is powered by an extraordinary brigade of local chefs, restaurants, producers and sponsors who generously donate their time and expertise.

One of those chefs is Chris Hudich from Wharf Shed Geelong. This year marked an incredible milestone for Chris - 25 years since he first stepped into the Longest Lunch kitchen as a young apprentice. Over the years he has become one of the region’s most respected culinary figures, known for championing local produce and creating dishes full of heart and flavour. Yet he continues to return each year, sleeves rolled up, cooking alongside fellow chefs in support of Barwon Health.

He was joined by an impressive line-up of culinary talent from across the region,  chefs from local restaurants including 1915, Mexicams, Alma, The Arborist, Retreat, TARRA Queenscliff, The Great Western Hotel, The Davidson at The Gordon and many more - each contributing their creativity to a menu that celebrates the best of our local food culture and produce.

Of course, an event like this doesn’t happen without the support of generous sponsors like the event presenting partner Hamo Hospitality, the producers, volunteers and organisers working behind the scenes. Their commitment ensures that what began more than 20 years ago as a fundraising lunch has grown into one of Geelong’s most loved community events.

And then there are the guests themselves, this year there was an incredible 296 of them! The business and community leaders, friends, colleagues and long-time supporters who return year after year. Many now consider the Longest Lunch part of their own annual calendar, a chance to gather, celebrate and give back.

That collective generosity has made a real difference. Over the years, Geelong’s Longest Lunch has helped support vital equipment, research and patient care at Barwon Health.

It’s proof that when a community comes together around the table, the impact can last long after the final course is served.
