The Legacy continues

By Zoe Waters, Executive Director Barwon Health Foundation

What makes Anam Cara House truly remarkable is how it came to be. It was not born from policy or planning alone, but from the vision and generosity of a community that believed we could - and should - do more for those facing the end of life. Philanthropy was not an add-on; it was the foundation. Every room, every garden, every quiet space reflects the collective will of people who chose to give back in a way that would endure.

That legacy enters a new and important chapter.

With Barwon Health now operating all palliative care services from Anam Cara House, we are seeing the integration of this extraordinary facility into our broader public health system. This is a significant step. Barwon Health is proud to continue delivering the specialised, compassionate end of life care it is known for across our region, now extended through Anam Cara House.

Importantly, this transition does not mark the end of philanthropy’s role - instead, it reinforces it.

Philanthropy has been part of the fabric of our health service since 1848, shaping care for generations. The Barwon Health Foundation is proud to continue the Anam Cara philanthropic legacy, and the relationships that underpin it, into the future.

Through the establishment of a dedicated Anam Cara Palliative Care Fund, the community has a clear and enduring way to continue shaping the experience of care. Government funding will support the essential clinical services, but it is philanthropy that will enable the ‘above and beyond’ - the homelike environment, the specialised equipment, the complementary therapies, and the small but powerful touches that bring comfort in life’s final days.

This is the essence of legacy giving. It is about more than a moment - it is about creating something that continues to care for others long into the future.

Anam Cara House has always been a place built by community, for community. That does not change. In fact, it becomes even more important. As the need for palliative care grows ad evolves across our region, so too does the need for us to ensure that every person can access care that is not only clinically excellent, but deeply personal and compassionate.

The story of Anam Cara is, and always will be, a story of generosity. A reminder that in the moments that matter most, it is community that carries us.

And through continued philanthropy into the next chapter, that legacy will endure.
